A Lamp Unto My Feet

God's Word as Nourishment (bread)

Word of God is the bread of life; 'Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word...' (Luke 4:4).

1 Peter 2:2 instructs newborn believers to desire the pure milk of the word for growth.

Jeremiah 15 and Psalm 119:103 portray God's words as nourishment and joy: 'Your words were

found and I ate them' and 'sweeter than honey.'

Christ is the ultimate nourishment; his words are 'spirit and life' and provide life and sustenance (John

6:63).

Relationship with God apart from God's word is dangerous; the spirit becomes anemic without the

word, which must be devoured rather than merely studied.

God's Word as lamp / light

God's word is described as light and bread, serving as a lamp that shows the path (Psalms 119:105).

God's word is not self-help; it directs choices and determines which path to follow.

The entrance of God's words gives light and understanding to the simple; God illuminates, not only

commands (Psalms 119:130).

Scripture as Sword / Spiritual Warfare

The Word of God functions as a spiritual sword (Ephesians 6:17).

Christian life is spiritual warfare against spiritual darkness, not against people.

God's word is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword; it discerns thoughts and intents

and pierces the heart, separating bone and marrow (Hebrews 4:12).

Jesus used Scripture to resist temptation.

Believers struggling with temptation are instructed to apply Scripture as a weapon.

Word is Alive, Word = Jesus

Scripture is God‐breathed and alive; all Scripture is given by inspiration (2 Timothy).

God's word accomplishes its purpose and does not return void (Isaiah 55).

Faith is produced by hearing the word of God; faith comes by hearing (Romans 10).

The word gives new, abiding life; believers are born again through the living word (1 Peter 1:23).

The word sanctifies and perfects believers into the image of Christ; Your word is truth and the Word

is Jesus (John 17:17; John 1:1)
